Cheikh earned a BA in history and archaeology from AUB in 1985. She is a specialist in the Abbasid Caliphate and Byzantium periods, and has a research focus on women and gender. Following her studies at AUB she earned a doctorate from Harvard University, in the United States, in 1992. She returned to AUB the same year as a faculty member and was promoted to full professor in 2006.

She has published three history books and co-edited three volumes, including “One Hundred and Fifty,”AUB’s main academic publication to mark 150 years, issued in 2016. In addition, she has delivered more than 100 published articles, reviews, invitational lectures, conference and workshop papers.
